The 6th Winchester Basketball tournament was organized by the Winchester School in Jebel Ali. The tournament took place over three days, from the 24th of April to the 26th. The boys of the under-17 team of Dubai Scholars took part in the tournament, and won the 2nd runner up trophy.
On the 16th of April, a round of selections took place, selections which created a platform for the hardworking, determined basketball players of Years 9-11 to prove their basketball skill. A team of 12 students was brought together by Coach Irfan, a team which consisted of Akindu, Devin, Shaveen, Nimhan, Joshua, Mihir, Tharuka, Zenden, Oudad, Dhay, Zidane and Paran. |
DSPS was ready to face DPS Dubai. It was a difficult match, as DPS Dubai was leading at first. With 15 seconds remaining on the clock, the score was 11 to 10, with DSPS down by one point. The player's hearts were thumping against their ribs. They couldn’t afford to lose once again. Oudad got the ball and passed it to Tharuka…… 12 seconds remaining…. Tharuka went for the shot…. and he scored!!! DSPS was up by one point, and that was a relief. However, with 10 seconds remaining on the clock, their opponents didn’t seem likely to give up.

DPS Dubai fought back, and DSPS got called up for a foul. Two free-throws were offered to DPS Dubai.
“Guys, say your prayers!” shouted some of the DSPS players. “Please don’t make it, please don’t make it,” the DSPS team prayed. DPS Dubai missed the shot. The buzzer went ‘RRRRRRIIIIIINNNNGGGG’. ‘Yaasssssss,' the DSPS team screamed, as they ran straight to the court, hugging one another and thanking Tharuka for making the winning shot. |
